Boxing Is Broken
The Wire, the belated HBO series that can best, and most purely, be described as being about how a city (specifically, Baltimore) works, and more importantly, how what doesn’t toil stays that way, is my favorite TV series of all time. The Wire surpasses all other televised spectacle in its stubborn refusal to procrastinate by the established rules of fanciful drama – the capable guys act bad sometimes (and not in a cool antihero Tony Soprano kindly of way), the bad guys can be disturbingly sympathetic, mistakes stock, complexities abound, and there is never a natty bow to tie everything together at the end. The essence of The Wire is that people find themselves in institutions – law enforcement, the slip someone a Mickey Finn trade, the shipping diligence, education, the media – that are lengthy established and irrevocably damaged. No be important how people respond to these institutions, be it by irresistible advantage of their flaws for live gain, struggling in futilely to make things more advisedly, or simply trying to go with the teem and survive to see tomorrow, the institutions never difference. They never improve. They just steamroll on, leaving a haul of bodies and broken dreams in their wake.
