Dunn County Humane Society trying to reduce feral cat numbers
MENOMONIE — With as many as 7,000 feral or set free-roaming cats calling Dunn County stingingly, Humane Society officials have absolute to take action.
Dunn County Humane Community officials are offering a low-price spay-or-neuter program — otherwise called the ambush, alter and return program — to slash the number of wild cats roaming the county.
"This program is about reducing the overpopulation of feral cats," Humane Fellowship executive director Joy Seehaver said. "In this quarter we have many farms, so there are many places for cats to hole up and have their litters."
The program started in April with a $2,500 subvention from the American Society for the Fending of Cruelty to Animals. So far 20 cats have been spayed or neutered as part of the program, but that legions is significantly less than the 120-cat aspiration officials hoped to have reached, Seehaver said.
Still, "it's 20 cats, which is safer than nothing," she noted.
The cost to oophorectomize a cat is $25, while a spay costs $40. Those totals are significantly below the ordinary costs of $90 for a fix and $120 for a spay, Seehaver said.
